La Serena is a family run estate, with Andrea Mantengoli at the helm since 1997. The estate was established in 1934 even though wine has always been made. The first Brunello di Montalcino was produced in 1988 with the name “La Serena”. The estate now includes 50 hectare 10 of them are vineyard. La Serena new cellar is designed by Andrea’s brother Marcello who is an organic architect, it was built in 2003.
When you look at Montalcino “terroir” you are surprised by the perfect synergy among many different soils and the climate. Sangiovese grapes find here the perfect balance but it can reward or punish you according to the way you have to cultivate it and where you decide to have your vineyard. To be organic, or better I can say “natural”, is the right way to enhance the differences, and to select the best areas to optimize the potential of each terroir.
After a manual harvest, we choose the berries in the cellar in the selection table. Than the grapes are partially squashed and after the first fermentation in steel tank the wort perform the malolactic fermentation inside barriques, wooden casks of 30-40 hl and inside truncated cone vats. Follow ageing in oak casks for minimum 2 years and long refinement in bottles. My Riserva born and develop inside wood.
La Serena wines have always been produced with respect for tradition and the environment, it is from 2010 that began the process of organic certification. My wine respect the differences of the soil, my vineyards are were the vineyard were always made, and the result is a wine that respect the land and the vintage.
