“The best weekend of my life”. These are the words chosen and posted on Instagram by tennis champion, Caroline Wozniacki, who celebrated her marriage to former NBA All-Star David Lee in the idyllic setting of Castiglion del Bosco in Montalcino. Born in 1990 in Odense, Denmark, Wozniacki is one of the strongest tennis players in recent years, a former world No. 1 (she held the title for no less than 71weeks) and winner of the 2017 WTA Finals and the 2018 Australian Open. She has won 30 WTA singles titles, and is considered on the most complete players of the modern era by tennis professionals and fans alike.
Surrounded by breathtaking views and a fairytale atmosphere, Wozniacki exchanged vows with 36 year-old David Lee, whose long career in the NBA (he retired in 2017) included an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors and two appearances as an All Star team member. The elegant, romantic couple’s intimate ceremony was attended by 120 guests, including a number of sports champions such as Serena Williams, considered by many to be the greatest female tennis player of all time, with a record 23 Grand Slam titles and a playing style that has revolutionised the sport. Also on the guest list was another former world No. 1, Germany’s Angelique Kerber, winner of three Grand Slams (with the exception of Roland Garros), and phenomenal Spanish basketball player, Pau Gasol (Lee’s team-mate in the San Antonio Spurs), whose long list of titles include two NBA championships and a World Championship with the Spanish national team, where he was chosen as the Most Valuable Player.
Gasol also treated himself to a relaxing break at a noted trattoria in Sant’Angelo in Colle, a small village a few kilometres from Montalcino, where he enjoyed steak washed down with a good Brunello and received a celebratory t-shirt (“Keep Calm & Eat Brunello”). Once again, Montalcino was confirmed as a very popular venue for sportspersons and fashion or show business celebrities who choose to exchange their vows here – from Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci and Martina Maccari, to Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi and Gaia Lucariello. Without forgetting – and here the list would be really long – (Barak and Michelle Obama, Shakira and Pique, Belen Rodriguez, Massimiliano Allegri etc…), all those who decide to spend a relaxing day in a place that has truly few equals in the world.
