The Montalcino DOCG has been confirmed as our country’s greatest red wine
With 4th place being awarded to Campogiovanni’s Brunello di Montalcino 2006, this wine is at the head of the Italian ‘team’ and it is also the most recurrent denomination among the 100 top wines
with 4 different labels
Montalcino, 21rst November 2011 – There is no stopping the ascent of Brunello 2006 in the Olympus of the best ever years. The 2006 Brunello of Campogiovanni scored 4th place in the Top 100, the world grading according to the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator.
The estate on the south-west slope of the Montalcino hill was purchased by Agricola San Felice during the early 80s. Currently it has 14 hectares of Brunello di Montalcino vineyards, the oldest of which was planted in the mid 60s. The estate counts on the expertise of enologist Leonardo Bellaccini.
The classification of the American wine magazine also awarded another 3 Brunellos: La Togata 2006 of Tenuta Carlina is 17th on the list, Brunello di Montalcino 2006 La Serena is 24th and Casanova di Neri’s Brunello Tenuta Nuova 2006 is in the 57th place.
On the list there are another 16 Italian labels apart from the 4 Brunello di Montalcino . «This recognition from overseas – says the President of the Consorzio Ezio Rivella – not only confirms the high level of the Montalcino producers, it is yet another proof that the 2006 vintage was one of the best ever for our wine.
For the record, the highest score of the Top 100 was awarded to the Californian Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2009 of Kosta Brown. Second came another Californian wine: Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Kathryn Hall 2008 and third, the French Vouvray Moelleux Clos du Bourg Premier Trie 2009 of Domaine Huët.
The Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was founded in 1967 after the recognition of the D.O.C., as a free association of producers with the intention of safeguarding a wine whose prestige was asserting itself more and more. It has during the years embodied an instrument of scrupulous and responsible self-discipline, bringing together old and new, small and large estates, in such a way that the wise consolidated customs became a common strategy for qualitative success. The Consorzio safeguards and promotes all four Montalcino denomination wines: Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, Moscadello di Montalcino and Sant’Antimo Doc; the remaining part is planted with Igt.
There are 250 producers (of which 200 are bottlers), all of whom are members of the Consorzio. In all there are 3500 hectares of vineyards in Montalcino divided as follows: 2100 hectares are planted with Brunello di Montalcino; 510 hectares are planted with Rosso di Montalcino; 50 hectares are planted with Moscadello di Montalcino; 600 hectares are planted with Sant’Antimo Doc; the remaining part is planted with Igt.
On average every year 6,500,000 bottles of Brunello di Montalcino are produced. 4,000,000 of Rosso di Montalcino, 80,000 of Moscadello di Montalcino and 500,000 of Sant’Antimo.
60% of the produce is exported and the total turnover in the wine sector of Montalcino is around 140 million euros.
