WINE - CONSORZIO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO: EXCELLENT 2015-2016 VINTAGES EARN POSITIVE SALES 2020 DOCG LABELLING FOR BRUNELLO +12%

Roughly 9 million bottles of Brunello di Montalcino vintage are ready for sale, following Consortium issue of the same number of DOCG seals in 2020. Valoritalia reports a figure +12.2% higher than the number of bottles placed on the market for 2019, and up +4.3% over the average of the last 5 years. 

Leading the way is the 2015 vintage, judged extraordinary by international critics and the focus of a global boom in orders before even arriving on the shelves, and in this year also entering the market with the Reserve. This vintage, in its first year of sales, has already done better than the previous two years: up +53% and +32%, respectively. The 2016 vintage offers equally excellent prospects: over November-December, Brunello vintners requested 2.7 million DOCG seals, readying an equal number of bottles for global distribution.

“Considering the economic context, the overall results are thoroughly positive”, said Fabrizio Bindocci, Chairman of Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. “Even though normal circumstances would see at least double the growth, we’ve had backing from strong allies in this extremely difficult period: namely the two best consecutive vintages in history. Thanks to the 2015 vintage we’ve done the very best possible, and now 2016 holds all the cards for securing the place of the Brunello brand among the greatest of all wines.”

The Consortium notes that the health emergency has limited but not halted overall growth, and that results would have been still more positive without the drop in demand in May and December. Deliveries of Rosso di Montalcino seals remained virtually stable in 2020, at over 4.1 million bottles (-1%). 

The Consorzio di Tutela del Vino Brunello di Montalcino gathers 212 members (98.2% of Brunello production), protecting a total of more than 4,300 hectares in the District of Montalcino. Of these, 3,150 are enrolled in DOC and DOCG: 2,100 for Brunello, restricted since 1997; 500 for Rosso di Montalcino; 50 for Moscadello and 480 for Sant'Antimo.
