BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO: A RECORD START IN THE FIRST QUARTER FOR THE SUPER 2016 VINTAGE, +37% STICKERS DELIVERED
07/04/2021
BINDOCCI (CHAIRMAN OF THE CONSORTIUM): MORE THAN 5.2 MILLION BOTTLES ON THE MARKET, NEVER SO MANY REQUESTS IN MARCH
(Montalcino, Siena, 7th April 2021). A record start of the year for Brunello di Montalcino sales. The 2015 Riserva and, above all, the super 2016 vintage brought delivery of State stickers (fascette) for bottles ready for sale to soaring heights, crushing all previous records. Overall, the first quarter of 2021 closed with a 37% increase over last year and 23% above the average of the last ten years. In particular, after the first two months, which saw a 19% increase over the same Covid-free period last year, March was by far the best of the decade, with 92% above the average recorded from 2011 to today.
“It is not rhetorical to state that our last two vintages, among the best ever in terms of quality, are proving to be far stronger than the tragedy we are experiencing,” said the Chairman of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Fabrizio Bindocci. “The numbers,” he added, “point out that the bottles placed on the market last year were 12% more than the previous year. Now, after the success achieved with international critics, we are dealing with a new vintage that from mid-November to today can boast delivery of over 5.2 million bottles, accounting for almost half of the entire new production released in 2021.”
According to the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, the most significant growth for the DOCG appellation is being recorded in foreign markets, starting from the historical U.S. demand which is picking up again with the reopening of restaurants. International wine critics have played a fundamental role as they laid the grounds and raised expectations for a product that, from a commercial perspective, is a must-have for collectors, enthusiasts and haute-cuisine restaurants in the United States and around the world.
