WINE, THE CONSORTIUM OF BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RECORDED + 18% IN SALES IN 2022 BINDOCCI: A DECREASED PRODUCTION DIDN’T IMPACT ON OUR GOAL. 2023 YEAR OF CONSOLIDATION

02/03/2023

(Montalcino-SI, March 1, 2023). Brunello di Montalcino experiences an increase in sales again, which recorded +18% in 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year, with a +7% variation of sales volume. These results were observed by The Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino through Osservatorio Prezzi, a tool for monitoring sales performance based on declarations by a homogeneous sample of local wineries.

According to the analyzed sample, which represents the 28% of the DOCG production capacity, a significant increase in the average price led to a positive performance in most of the export and domestic markets. The demand stands out in Italy, which represents the first market for the top of red Tuscan wines, with a +27% increase in value (+19% sales volume). Orders from the United States are performing well too, with a growth of 29% at the end of the year. As a result the United States continue to be the main international market, with a market share which rises to around 30% of total sales of Brunello abroad. In the Top 5 export countries there are also Canada, Germany and Switzerland, meanwhile the demand is decreasing in the United Kingdom. Overall in 2022 the 94% of the sales volume of the 2017 Annata was commercialized. The 2016 Riserva, another protagonist of last year sales, led to the substantial sold out of the wineries in Montalcino.

“Last year our wineries were able to perform even better than in the lucky past two-year period – the President of the Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino, Fabrizio Bindocci - Firstly because it is the proof of the rising recognition of our brand over the world, despite the high reputation of the single annata; moreover because the result has been achieved, despite the volumes of the 2017 were less than 15% compared to the previous year. “Consolidation” – Bindocci concluded – “will be the keyword of 2023 to be achieved through an intense activity of promotion and positioning in Italy and abroad”.

This year among the main events for the Consortium and the 214 members there are the Prowein in Düsseldorf, from March 19th to 21st, and Vinitaly in Verona (April 2nd-5th), and the local strategic events, like Red Montalcino, expected in early summer and Benvenuto Brunello, from November 17th to 27th, and the formula Brunello Day in different key countries will be also confirmed.
